Methods For Dealing With Cohesive Devices In English-Chinese Translation

Cohesive devices play a significant role in discourse coherence,and cohesion in discourse is mainly a connection in meaning,not just in structure and form.Cohesive devices are necessary to make a text meaningful.Cultivating the awareness of textual cohesion can help us understand the original text and improve the quality of the translation.Generally,cohesive devices can be used in both English and Chinese texts;but due to their differences,the use of cohesive devices also varies.The application cases of cohesive translation are involved in the historical,literary and legal texts,but the military texts are seldom analyzed.Therefore,it is necessary to translate the The Philosophy of Chinese Military Culture,which not only deals with military ancient and modern wars,but also the significant ancient philosophies.Its translation can provide references for later wars,accelerate the spread of Chinese culture,and help the world to understand the philosophies behind Chinese wars.Taking the translated materials of The Philosophy of Chinese Military Culture as the research object,this paper analyzes the reasons for the unequal cohesive devices in English-Chinese translation,and adopts corresponding translation strategies related to the culture of the target language according to different cohesion devices.Based on the translation practice and analysis,the author of the study has concluded four cohesive devices: reference,substitution,ellipsis and connection,and proposed specific translation methods and skills for each cohesive device.Besides,this paper also explores how to realize the conversion between target language and source language on the premise of being faithful to the original text,so as to make the translation more consistent with the expression mode of the target language.Through this translation practice,the translator summarizes the translation strategies of cohesive devices in military texts on the basis of the previous studies,including repetition,ellipsis,recurrence and so on.In addition,the translation practice is formal in style,accurate in wording,and the overall style should conform to the expression habits of ancient Chinese.The translator also hopes that this translation practice can make contributions to this field and provide reference for future generations of translators.
