A Practice Report On Simulated Simultaneous Interpreting Of Foundations Of Photography: Lenses Tutorial Video

With the development of technology and popularization of mobile phones and cameras, photography is increasingly receiving considerable attentions and interest from the public. While the increase of the English photographic tutorial videos is being observed on the internet, due to the absence of subtitles, it is difficult for Chinese amateur photographers to understand the content in those tutorials. This thesis chooses a famous English photographic tutorial 'Foundations of Photography:Lenses' as the studying case to facilitate the research on the Simultaneous Interpretation strategies on technology event.Photographic tutorial videos combine the elements of technology and education, which makes them different from generic videos and brings new challenges for simultaneous interpreters. The tutorial contains huge amount of terminologies and information, but is simple in expression for the ease understanding. During the practice, the author has encountered difficulties in the following aspects 1) the translation of terminologies, numbers and websites names in technological context; 2) the translation of long sentences, parallel construction and repetitive structure of photographical information; 3) the translation of colloquial diverse expressions in tutorial.According to Skopos Theory, which focuses on translation as an activity with an aim or purpose, the SI strategies in question have to serve the translation purposes. The main focus of this practice is to provide the audience with accurate, complete and fluent interpretation in simultaneous manner. On this basis, the author offers several solutions: 1) conditional 'zero translation' for terminologies, numbers and websites names according to the context, in order to preserve the characteristics of the original; 2) complementary translation and omission for long sentences, parallel constructions and repetitive structures, to ensure consistency; 3) reduction and summarization of unimportant information in colloquial expressions to maintain the SI efficiency and accuracy.
