President Xi Jinping has expounded on the vision of creating a community of shared future for mankind on numerous international occasions. It is one of the most important aspects of the vision to promote inter-civilization exchanges. Moreover,in international communication,Chinese culture going abroad has been an important tool to show her time-honored history and special culture,to establish her proper cultural image in the world, and to enhance world's comprehension and recognition of China.Because Chinese literature is a treasure of Chinese civilization, its output appears particularly important. This requires that the Chinese-English translators should be responsible to shoulder the historical mission of transmitting Chinese culture to the world. The Three-Body Problem translated by Ken Liu,has won the 73 rd Hugo Award for The Best Novel on August 23,2015.It is a big event for Chinese science fiction world that the author Liu Cixin was the first Asian writer to win such an award. This honor proves that Chinese science fiction has received the international recognition, and also reflects the positive effects of the translator Ken Liu in transmitting Chinese culture. After a brief review and summary of Western and Chinese researches on science fiction translation, the thesis finds out that very few articles are dedicated to exploring how to translate the elements of indigenous culture in the novel. It is known that the foreignization strategy takes cultural differences into consideration and preserves the features of original language and culture. This strategy can help target readers broaden imagination and enjoy an entirely exotic atmosphere,so as to achieve the goal of cultural transmission.Consequently, based on foreignization theory proposed by Lawrence Venuti, the thesis makes a profound analysis of and research on the translation strategy and techniques applied by Ken Liu in dealing with Chinese cultural elements in TheThree-Body Problem. The thesis mainly focuses on the culture-specific expressions in this English version in terms of five aspects, which are lexical vacancy, cultural idioms, rhetoric, dialogues and traditional thoughts.Through the detailed analysis of the examples in these five aspects, the thesis draws a conclusion that translator adopts three approaches to foreignization of Chinese culture in this novel: transliteration, literal translation, and annotation subdivided into transliteration plus annotation and literal translation plus annotation.
