Term is the treasure of specialized knowledge and linguistic representation of concepts.Due to the diversities on language and culture among different countries, one mere concept may not deliver the same semantic equivalence, which makes it difficult for the translation of texts in specialized domains, particularly for the translation of terms.Based on the translation practice of parts of chapters from Codex Alimentarius:Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification Systems, this report analyses the terms which are characteristic of conceptual vacancy, conceptual incongruity and conceptual similarity and summarizes the corresponding strategies of translation within the framework of Skopos Theory.According to the "Skopos Theory",translation is an act of aim, which requires the translators to adopt appropriate methods and strategies under full comprehension of the aim and function in which the target text is expected. In consideration of the difference between the original language and the target language as well as the legal culture, translators need to enrich the concept within the terms with variable needs, which help the communication of both parties at the extreme.Guided by the "Skopos Theory",the translation practice has explored and validated the usefulness of the methods of literal translation, literal translation with notes, loan strategy and explanatory translation. The results are expected to contribute to the development of translation on laws and policies of food import and export inspection and quarantine, and also hopefully to assist in the application and transmission of Codex Alimentarius in China.Besides, this research will provide some reference for translation teaching and practice.
