A Comparative Study On The Image Of "Salome" In Herodiade And Salome

Salome is a crucial female figure in the history of art development.Taken from the Bible and recreated consistently,her image is rich in humanistic connotation.Currently,the research about Salome's image in music is restricted to opera Salome by Strauss Richard.But,as the very first opera that was shown on the stage,Herodias also played a significant historical role in the evolvement of Salome's image.Thus,this article takes Salome's image as the object of study,analyzes the transformation from the original image in Bible to that in operas and integrates the historical background of the development.This article also explores the implementation models of Salome's image and music from a feminist point of view,and discusses the internal cultural connotation of Salome by examining her operatic image at different stages throughout the history.By contrastive analysis,a conclusion can be reached that although Massenet's opera was not as successful as that of Strauss Richard in the aspect of musical creation,the image of Salome he created was to some extent,an inspiration for the works after the 19th century.And there were certain similarities between the method of character-building used by the two operas.At the same time,the images of Salome constructed by the two works emerged at the end on the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century was more of an artistic expression under the influence of feminist ideology movement.By analyzing the transformation of Salome's image,we can not only obtain references for the future musical creation,but also scrutinize the development of inter-sexual relationship throughout the history.
