On Redundancy In Translation From The Perspective Of Information Theory

Information Theory is the study of information processing and transmission,and it covers encoding,channel,channel capacity,noise,redundancy,and decoding.In 1982,Eugene A.Nida introduced it to the study of translation.Since language serves as a information carrier,translation,which concerns the transformation of two languages,can be seen as the trans-coding of information.As the core of the theory,redundancy plays an important role in achieving dynamic equivalence in translation.The fifteenth chapter of Under The Net demonstrates the discrepancy between English and Chinese both in terms of linguistic structure and cultural backgrounds.Therefore,it is necessary to bridge the differences by modifying the redundancy of the original texts to an appropriate degree.On the linguistic level,strategies such as amplification,omission and structure conversion are applied to add or reduce the redundancy so as to avoid overloading of information.In regards to culture,amplification and annotation are employed to replenish background knowledge and achieve redundancy equivalence,which enables the cultural implication to be more explicit and acceptable by the target readers of the translated text.
