Information theory has been widely applied in the field of translation theory sincethe twentieth century. It emphasizes the nature of translation as a process ofinformation transmission. This thesis attempts to analyze the transmission of thesociocultural information in Ah Q Zheng Zhuan written by Lu Xun. It aims atdiscussing the application of information theory in literary translation by objectivelydescribing and comparing the translation of sociocultural information in Lyell’sversion and Yang Hsien-Yi&Gladys Yang’s version. Redundancy is the researchobject. Because of the difference of language structures and the difference of culturesbetween English and Chinese, it is inevitable to encounter the problem of redundancyunbalance in translation and the difficulty in understanding. It requires translators toemploy certain kinds of approaches to adapt the redundant cultural elements in theoriginal text to fit target readers’ channel, so as to achieve redundancy equivalence inthe target text and guarantee the effective transmission of cultural information.Based on a comparative analysis and illustration of the two versions, this thesiscomes up with two approaches to solve the problem of redundancy unbalance: keepingredundancy and adjusting redundancy, by which we can achieve dynamic equivalenceand ensure the target readers’ effective receiving of the original information.
