On Redundancy Translation From The Perspective Of Information Theory

This paper studies redundancy in translation from Chinese to English,based on the Self-Review Report on Undergraduate Education presented by a science and technology university.The self-review report introduces the current situation of undergraduate education in the university from six aspects,both achievements and deficiencies in the undergraduate education and teaching,and as for these deficiencies,a specific solution has been found after analyzing the subjective and objective factors,and it contains a lot of redundancy,which contributes to difficulties in translation.Therefore,this paper takes redundancy as the research object,guided by the Shannon's information theory.It analyzes the specific types of over-redundancy and under-redundancy,and summarizes different translation strategies for different situations.It is hoped to guide the Chinese-English translation of redundancy in report text.The redundancy in the language is an critical factor to ensure language communication.In intralingual communication,the redundancy in one language is always moderate to guarantee successful communication.However,in interlingual communication,if redundancy in the source language is copied into the target language,it may not match the channel capacity of the target receiver because of over-redundancy and under-redundancy,which impedes communication.As one of the most important forms of language communication,over-redundancy and under-redundancy need to be handled in interlingual translation.In this paper,over-redundancy includes category words,some modifiers and verbs,and all types of repetition words,while under-redundancy contains numeral abbreviation,omitted information and some Chinese local words.If there is over-redundancy in the original text,the amount of useful information will be reduced,and the target text will be redundant in words.As for this,deletion and omission are often used to reduce the over-redundancy to ensure language communication.However,if there is under-redundancy in the original text,the amount of useless information will be added,and the target text will make no sense.In this context,amplification and paraphrase are used to add enough redundancy forconveying the meaning of the original text.In addition,the types of under-redundancy remain to be further studied because of limited examples from the chosen text of this paper.
