The Reform and Opening-up policy has been implemented for more than thirty years, and the economic globalization has become the irresistible tendency. The cooperation in the economic field makes this world a global village.By contrast with economic development, cultural exchanges lag behind.Especially in translation field, the introduction of Chinese literary works into western countries faces many difficulties. One and the most important reason is that culture-loaded expressions function as a hinder in cultural exchanges. Thus the translation of culture-loaded expressions has become a challenging topic in order to contribute to the cultural exchanges.Under the "go global" strategy of Chinese culture, the translation of literary works has been a practical way to spread Chinese culture. Many translators are organized and much money is invested in introducing Chinese classics to English-speaking countries, but only a few are published abroad. This phenomenon causes scholars' attention. And the author holds the opinion that problem lies in the biased attitude of Chinese translators towards translating.Functional equivalence, though it has been discussed for many years, provides a renewing perspective in the cultural exchanges. The turning point came in 2012 when Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize for literature. As a native writer,Mo Yan wins the international reputation through the English versions of his works. They are well accepted by western readers, especially the English versions.Among all the literary works,Sandalwood Death is a historical novel full of culture-loaded expressions. And it provides rich materials for this research.Firstly, this thesis introduces the significance, purpose and structure of the thesis, and has a thorough literature review on the studies of the English versions of Mo Yan's literary works and culture-loaded expressions.Next, the thesis has a detailed introduction to functional equivalence theory including its development and principles for achieving functional equivalence. Then,it classifies culture-loaded expressions in Sandalwood Death into five groups. And each kind of culture-loaded expressions appearing in Sandalwood Death is subdivided into more different categories.Under the guidance of functional equivalence, the thesis carries on a translation study on these culture-loaded expressions. The author analyzes the strategies and methods which are employed in the translation of culture-loaded expressions in Sandalwood Death at some length. And each kind of culture-loaded expressions is illustrated with profuse examples. Finally, based on the analysis, the author attempts to discuss the applicability of functional equivalence theory, summarize some practical skills in translating culture-loaded expressions for translators to follow, and put forward some critical comments on the current situation of literary translation.
