A Report On The Translation Of “China Old World”

The translation practice comes from a project named “The Introduction to China Old World” in Shanghai Wufan Translation Co.,Ltd.It is a significant project of cultural heritage protection that successfully rescues and restores the traditional and historical buildings.The project gives a detailed description of the background information,key objectives,measures and historical and cultural significance.The Chinese-to-English translation of the project is intended to introduce the project overseas and make initial preparations for its application for Cultural World Heritage by UN.The author of this thesis analyzes the characteristic of the source text in terms of language and culture,and ensures the translation of proper nouns and terminology by referring to relevant books in order to ensure the accuracy and appropriateness.As for four-character structures,one unique feature of Chinese,the author of this thesis comes up with different strategies based on those concrete translation examples,like literal translation or free translation.To ensure the objectivity of the source text,the writer of the source text employs a lot of subjectless sentences and long complex ones,which makes them difficult to translate.The author of this thesis summarizes two translation strategies and techniques through studying the translation of certain typical sentences.By studying the translation of the text,not only can we improve the translation skills,gain related knowledge of particular field and also the translation practice lays a solid foundation for the author of the thesis to be a professional translator.
