During the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, the Chinese nation was standing at the crossroad of historical transition after going through vicissitudes and was experiencing profound historical changes. The Qing Empire went out of the stage of history where colonialism was invaded into Chinese social ideology and it became the Republic of China with residual semi-colonial and semi-feudal culture, so researching colonialism in literary works of this period is of great significance on studying history and literature. Under the background of that era, writers and their works were as many as stars, in which Eileen Chang was one of the most representative writers and her works exuded unique charm.This paper begins with character design in Eileen Chang's works in the background of colonialism and focuses on three aspects of problems:firstly, starting with the character design in Eileen Chang's works, find out the characteristics of the people living in the background of colonialism, which has important significance on the better understanding of the actual situation of the survival of the Chinese nation under the influence of colonialism as well as the ideological entanglement and tolerance arising from the mutual collision between the new trend of thoughts and the old traditional culture under the disintegration of the old political and social system.Secondly, under the shocks and comparisons of the new and the old Chinese culture, widen the cross section of the comparison, compare the colonial features in Eileen Chang's works with those in the famous American writer Toni Morrison's works to explore the similarities and differences of the receiving ways of colonialism on the original political and social forms, and then excavate the struggle and breakthrough of human nature in the aspects of social and moral concepts in different social ideologies.Finally, beginning with the significance of realism and the nationalism and patriotic emotions deeply hidden in Eileen Chang's works, analyze the formation reasons and art values of personality traits of the characters in Eileen Chang's works under the view of colonialism, which has important significance on better studying the feelings behind Eileen Chang's works, better interpreting the characteristics of the Chinese nation under the social background and better entering Eileen Chang's inner world.
