Based on the story script of Su Tong's novellas Wives and Concubines, Lao Zai's musical Big Red Lantern shapes different characters through the musical stage, behind which lies the creation concept of combining the western motivation with traditional aesthetics. Through various appropriate musical forms, together with multi-dimensional and multi-level singing-dancing narration, this musical has depicted women's pursuit of and struggle in family, emotions and survival rights, and their extremeresistance image of fighting even at the cost of death against their tragic fate. The four wives all have their distinct characters:the first wife Yuru is a cold serious phony bodhisattva; the second wife Zhuoyun is a malicious venomous smiling tiger; the third wife Meishan is a famous celebrity, stubborn and flirtatious; the fourth wife Songlian is a proud but conceited female student. The Chen mansion is the epitome of the big background of the feudal era. The emotions of desire, love and hatred, among many other feelings of these lovely, hateful and lamentable females have exhibited truly, incisively and vividly on the stage, intriguing the audience to think and leaving them mixed emotions.
