This report is aimed at generalizing and summarizing the translation of Sales Contract for Elevator Equipment for Project Oriental Xinghai,so as to study the translation of Chinese modal verbs in the Chinese-English translation of the sales contract. In this report, the author used case analysis and summarized the C-E translation methods of Chinese modal verbs as follows:1.Obligatory words like?(ying),??(yingdang),and ??(bixu)should be translated into shall, while ??(bixu)should be rendered into must in some specially emphatic and infrangible terms and conditions of the contract 2.Authoritative words like ?(ke),??(keyi)should be translated into may in expressing authorization and permission, while they can be rendered into can in expressing the meaning of "have the ability or capability to accomplish something".3.Prohibitive words are often translated into the negative forms of modal verbs like shall not and must not.4.Sometimes it is necessary to analyze the meaning of the original text according to the context, and then decide whether an English modal verb should be added or a Chinese modal verb should be omitted.5.For the Chinese modal verbs with lower frequency of utilization,an equivalent modal verb,a verb,or a verbal phrase may be chosen.Through the translation practice, some rules or regulations for translating Chinese modal verbs in sales contracts into English are summarized so as to provide other trans-lators with some reference, and thus ensuring the correct and standard C-E translation of Chinese modal verbs in sales contracts and avoiding mistranslation or even legal dis-putes.
