The present dissertation aim to make a comprehensive analysis on the polysemous verb "Zheng" in the northeast dialect, which can refer to or replace many specific verbs, far beyond its own category, and therefore induces meanings relatively hollow and wandering, hazy.Verbs of this kind can be named "polysemous verbs".Inspired by the "Three facets" theory, this paper investigates, from a multiple perspective describing the attributes of "Zheng" in syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and its application constraints as well. This paper consists of five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, cover the significance of this topic,a literature review of "Zheng",and the research method. The second chapter analyzes the semantic attributes of "Zheng",and distinguishes it from other polysemous verb as "Lai","Nong","Gao" and "Da".Then, the apanalepsis and non-apanalepsis relation are distinguished in the light of the repetition of the verb and its antecedent. The third chapter "Zheng",specifying the syntatic conditions on which it takes an object ot not."Zheng" can take both a nominal object and a verbal object. The nominal object can be a single noun,numeral-measure words,a noun with a modifier,or "de construction".The verbal object can be a single verb,a verb with a modifier, verb phrases or the conjunction words. When "Zheng" takes no objects,it can be used either as a bare verb,or followed by a complement or an adverbial modifier. The fourth chapter analyzes "Zheng" pragamtically, and sums up its rhetorical effects, including semantic fuzziness, shortening time for encoding and decoding. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, which explains the shortcomings of this paper and the tentative plan for further research.
