The discussion about religious issue on Hsi-Yu Chi begins with the publication of the work. The work with numerous allegories is based on the folk tale of the monk Tripitaka which makes it highly relative to the religious culture.Despite the argument on the motif,Hsi-Yu Chi is not a simple story about supernatural spirits, but a product full of religious terms, puns, doctrines and fables.Hsi-Yu Chi is the earliest Chinese novel translated into the western world, and it has been for about 300 years up to now. Therefore it has a solid foundation.Based on the researches in the western world, the sinologists mainly focus on the translation, the dissemination, the plot, the themes and also the allegorical, comedic, and pilgrimage motifs, given their natural advantage of the comparative perspective.Among all the results, the researches on the religious culture has always been a hot spot. However, most of the research results haven't been translated into Chinese, and so this has been a pity in this field, which makes it an urgent mission to introduce these researches into China. This is the basic idea of this thesis. The thesis is mainly made up of four parts. The first is about the translation versions and its religious express in Hsi-Yu Chi,the second is about the different understandings about the religious motif, the third is about the crucial topic of this religious issue, and the last one is about the current research situation and the plight of the study in this field.Hopefully, this thesis could be of some help regarding the interpretation of the religious problems on the Journey to the West.
