A Report On E-C Translation Of Knowledge Transfer (Chapter 1-5) With MT

Under the background of knowledge economy, the scientific and technological research and knowledge innovation of higher institutions act as propellers for social progress and industry competition. For polytechnic science-oriented universities, how to commercialize innovations and researches, and put them into good use has become an urgent problem to be solved. This report is based on the English to Chinese translation of Knowledge Transfer which introduces the amazing achievements and experience of scientific results at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University which will inspire research-oriented universities on technology transfer.Through the analysis of the text, the translator finds that the text involves considerable knowledge in specialized domains. As regards lexical level, the text is rich in professional terms and proper nouns. When it comes to syntactic level, the mixed use of simple, long and complex sentences stands out. Due to the limited time and urgent task, the translator is aided with Baidu Translate when translating the source text.Under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation, the translator post-edits the rendering of Baidu Translate by adopting various translation techniques, namely diction, conversion, employment of parallel texts at lexical level,and division, combination and reorganization at syntactic level. Based on the analysis mentioned above, the translator finds that in this translation practice, Baidu Translate contributes to improving the efficiency. Meanwhile, the specific translation techniques as mentioned above should be employed to solve problems in the process of post-editing to achieve faithfulness and readability of the rendering.The report consists of four parts. Chapter 1 introduces the project background and project plan. Chapter 2 describes translation process containing the analysis of the source text, theoretical foundation, the translation tool, translating text and proofreading after translation. Chapter 3 analyzes acceptable and unacceptable output of Baidu Translate at lexical and syntactic level in this practice,and the translator's post-editing of the rendering by adopting various translation techniques. Chapter 4 summarizes the analyses and limitations in this report.
