A Report On The Translation Of My Childhood In North Pole Village (Chapter 1-10)

This report is based on the translation practice of the first half of a Chinese rural novella called My Childhood in North Pole Village written by Chi Zijian.The novella from a unique child perspective depicts a mysterious life in North Pole Village in the utmost northern part of China in Mohe County, Heilongjiang Province. It is about childhood stories of a seven-year-old girl, Deng Zi, when fostered in grandma's home in North Pole Village. Chi Zijian takes her own childhood life as the prototype and uses the description of local customs to convey her devotion to the Northeast and meditation on human nature.The book is of typical Chinese native-soil work with distinctive language and characters. Its content and theme have certain appeal to foreign readers. External publicity of Chinese native-soil literature is always the hot topic in translation study and has gained excellent progress. In the meanwhile, the English translation of this genre is faced with a huge challenge. Native-soil flavor which is the product of the accumulation of culture in a certain region cannot be reproduced. Besides,due to the large differences between Chinese and western culture, sometimes it is difficult to find equivalent cultural phenomenon in the target language environment. Therefore, the representation of native-soil flavor is the biggest difficulty lying in the translation.This report probes into the relevant translation methods based on the translation practice on My Childhood in North Pole Village.The report consists of five parts. The first part is an introduction, mainly explaining research background and significance. The second part is the task description, including the author and the book, text features and applied theory. The third part describes the translation process, containing pre-translation preparation,translation phases and quality control. The fourth part is case analysis, which is the focus of this report. This part will reveal how the translator guided under rewriting theory adopts the methods of supplement, deletion and substitution to deal with translation problems and attempts to show the charm of Chinese native-soil language.The fifth part concludes the study with practicing gains and unsolved problems as well as suggestions for future relevant research.
