This report is based on the author's translation practice of Shaanxi Paper Cutting and Clay Sculpture Folk Art.Since the two traditional arts have been listed into the "Intangible Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO,the translation itself bears the responsibility of promoting the traditional Chinese culture.During the translation process, the author mainly adopts Peter Newmark's Semantic Translation(ST)and Communicative Translation(CT)theory.Semantic translation searches for "one nuance of meaning" of the source language, therefore, the author adopts ST in the translation of artistic terms,culturally-loaded words and proverbs to retain Chinese culture color;while communicative translation,by following the conventions of the target language, conveys more clearly and effectively to the target readers.Under the guidance of CT,the author tackles the source text from lexical and syntactic levels.Different translation strategies are employed accordingly, which include the selection of authentic lexis, conversion of part of speech, the adoption of passive voice, readjustment, omission and addition. The adoption of CT helps the target readers in achieving a better understanding of the source text. The translation practice shows that the combination of ST and CT can strike a balance between the original cultural flavor and the target readers.Through the flexible application of translation strategies under the guidance of ST and CT,the author hopes to shed light on the translation of other folk art texts.
