From Waxy Stone Frame To Lobster Crab Baskets: Wood Carving Master Chen Peichen's "Cutting Still"

The woodcarving of Chaozhou is one kind of folk custom art which of extremely local characteristics.It is famous for uncompromising attention,exquisitely carved and resplendent.It occupies an important position in the history of Chinese wood carving.And It is one of the four major Chinese wood carvings with Dongyang wood carving,Longyan wood carving and Yueyang wood carving.Chen Peichen,who is the master of Chaozhou's wood carving,has experienced the rescue,restoration and revitalization of Chaozhou's wood carving.He had witnessed the development of the Chaozhou's wood carving in new China and made an irreplaceable contribution to the development of it as a practitioner and a leader.This paper summarizes the reasons of Chen Peichen's wood carving art,and do analysis of the social environment,regional characteristics and cultural background of his art;The course of Chen Peichen's ‘cutting still' to comb,it can classifies them into three stages,namely the enlightenment of Chen Peichen's ‘cutting still' when he was a apprentice,the techniques to explore when he was young,and the creation of the peak and promotion when he was in the old age.At the same time,the paper studies the types,modifications and maintenance of the tool used in the art of Chen Peichen's wood carving,and focuses on the prodution process,the performance and the plasticity of the “Lobster Crab Basket”,to exploring the breakthrough of Chen Peichen's Artistic Innovation in wood carving,and the great contribution of he's made in this traditional handicraft heritage and development.
