Translation Of Culture-Loaded Words From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This thesis studies the translation of culture-loaded words and expressions from the perspective of skopos theory.The translated text in this thesis is cited from "Origins of the Taiping Vision:Cross-Cultural Dimensions of a Chinese Rebellion" written by Mr.Philip A.Kuhn,a famous American sinologist.This thesis selects the translations of the word "vision" as a cracker to understand translations of culture-loaded words and expressions in general.Both conceptual meaning and culture-loaded meaning of the word"vision" is analyzed against different cultural backgrounds,so that certain translation strategies and methods can be drawn.This thesis applies the doctrines of skopos theory as a guideline,analyzes the translation purposes,text characteristics and target readers of the source text and raises the proposal that based on the translation purpose and target reader,how the translation of "vision" can be completed aiming the delivery of message as well as its readability.By assessing the translation samples from the text,this thesis clarifies different translating strategies needed under different circumstances.When the conceptual meaning and culture-loaded meaning are both the same in source language and target language,the translating process can be straight and with a little help of notes;otherwise,multiple translating methods can be applied.
