A Report On E-C Translation Of Culture-loaded Words Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

The translation corpus is excerpted from chapters 10 and 11 of the �The Ministry of Utmost Happiness�,which was written by Indian female writer and politician Arundhati Roy and published in 2017.This book was nominated for the Booker Award and was named the best book of the year by the Washington Post and News Daily.The subject of this book is a realistic novel,selected part mainly describes the people's living conditions under the unequal caste system in India,as well as the government's oppression of the people and the resistance of the people.Although the society is not beautiful,people still strive to create a pure land.Culture-loaded words are a feature of the selected chapters and therefore have become the core of this report.Culture-loaded words are vocabulary that contain a nation's cultural characteristic.Proper translation of culture-loaded words directly influences the overall quality of literary works and the readers' understanding of the original text.In this report,the author adopted Nida's classification of cultural systems and summarized the culture-loaded words into four categories: material culture-loaded words,social culture-loaded words,religious culture-loaded words and linguistic culture-loaded words.And combined with Hans Vermeer's skopos theory,the author uses domestication and foreignization strategy to solve the translation difficulties that caused by four kinds of culture-loaded words.For material culture-loaded words,social culture-loaded words and religious culture-loaded words,transliteration,transliteration plus interpretation,and free translation are adopted to satisfy different translation purposes;for linguistic culture-loaded words,mainly reflected in the long sentences,so the author uses the split method and sentence reconstruction,making it in linewith the target language reader's way of thinking and language habits.This practical report,as far as the text itself is concerned,is of great significance for people to understand Indian society and spread Indian culture.Although it is a novel,it objectively reflects the real Indian society and hopes that more people will pay attention to India,understand India and help India.As far as the report itself is concerned,this report is aimed at the translation of culture-loaded words,which has certain reference value for future related reports.
