With the trend of globalization of the world economy, the situation of mutual integration and collision between Eastern and Western cultures is more remarkable. With the continuous growth of the economic strength of Western countries, the Western culture is more and more erosion of our national culture. In order to inherit and carry forward our national culture and art,we should pay more attention to our national painting especially.National culture directly affects the aesthetic characteristics of painting. In the traditional painting, the aesthetic features of the portraits are closely related to the national culture and the cultural environment at that time.In this paper, the three most distinctive stages of Chinese traditional portraits,Western classical portraits and the big-head painting in the Japanese Edo period are chosen, and their aesthetic characteristics are discusses.Through the four chapters of the discussion, their respective aesthetic characteristics and the reasons for the formation are elaborated. The first chapter discusses that Chinese traditional portraits are influenced by Chinese traditional thought and formism, and formed the aesthetic characteristics of "From shape to spirit, and the shape and the spirit exist at the same time".The second chapter discusses that the Western classical portraits are influenced by the imitation doctrine, emphasizing the vividness of characters. The third chapter discusses the appearance of the big-head painting from the Ukiyo-era in Japan during the period of certain times and the needs of national aesthetics. This kind of "big face" close-up style is more pursuit of the expression of the Inner emotion. The fourth chapter discusses the important role and historical significance of national culture in the development of portrait painting. In this paper, through the analysis of Chinese traditional portraits,Western classical portraits and Japanese big-head painting, the essence of traditional portraits is more fully grasped. At the same time, correctly understand the influence of national aesthetics on portraits and their inner aesthetic values, which have theoretical significance for the development of contemporary portraits. It is also helpful for my later paintings.
