A Study On The Application Of Chinese And English Cohesive Devices In Interpretation

In translation,whether relations between the elements in language are cohesive or not,it directly impacts on the quality of translation.Therefore,studies on cohesion become the concerning point of translation study.There are many scholars making an exploration about how to achieve high quality translation from the perspective of cohesion theory.And these studies are mainly on translation studies.Research achievements that have resulted from studies on interpretation from the perspective cohesion theory are not so many.And research achievements from the study on the application of Chinese and English cohesive devices are scanty.Strictly speaking,cohesion is not only the point that should be paid attention to in translation,it also should be paid attention to in interpretation.In interpretation,the interpreters do not only the word-for-word interpreting,but also the interpreting of the meaning and cohesion of the whole discourse.Based on Barack Obama's speeches,this thesis studies the application of Chinese and English cohesive devices in interpretation from the perspective of cohesion theory.It is one of characteristics of this thesis.Cohesive devices contain reference,substitution,ellipsis and conjunction on the level of grammatical cohesion.Reiteration and collocation are included in cohesive devices on the level of lexical cohesion.Through the study,this thesis finds out that reference is the cohesive device that is of high frequency in both Chinese and English cohesive devices.As for substitution and ellipsis,sometimes the interpreter needs to restore the specific meaning of the substitute.Conjunction is of great importance in discourse.In interpretation,the interpreter can regroup the information by use of conjunctions to achieve fluency of the target language.About reiteration and collocation,because of the difference of Chinese and English,these two cohesive devices are also different in Chinese and English.The interpreter needs to make some shifts of these two cohesive devices according to the specific situation.This thesis is in an effort to make the interpreters realize the importance of the application of cohesive devices in interpretation and make the interpreters master cohesive devices better.The interpreters can strengthen the training on the use of cohesive devices in daily interpreting practice.And making the quality of interpretation meets a new height.
