A Study Of Figure Interpreting In Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of Gile's Effort Model

Figure interpreting has been regarded as one of the most important factors that affect the quality of interpreting.If interpreters cannot transfer figures immediately,omission and misinterpreting of figures may occur.And poor quality of interpreting will follow.Based on the Gile's Effort Model,this thesis analyzes the problems and reasons for imbalanced effort in figure interpreting and discusses how to realize efficient allocation of effort to avoid problems with figures including misinterpreting and omitting figures caused by imbalanced effort and assure efficient production.And some strategies are discussed to coordinate figure interpreting tasks.Typical examples are selected from the press conferences after two sessions and applied in the detailed case studies.The case studies show that during figure interpreting in consecutive interpreting,figures carry large information with low predictability and redundancy as well as the differences in numerical system between English and Chinese.All of these features of figures increase the cognitive load for interpreters and the risk of imbalanced effort.Imbalanced effort causes omission and misinterpreting of figures.And the quality of interpreting is affected as well.Therefore,under the guidance of Gile's Effort Model of inequalities,adequate preparation and overall understanding of the source language in the listening and analysis phase can relieve strain on the interpreter's effort while interpreting figures so that more effort can be allocated in interpreting figures.The methods of using mental images and comprehension of figures are applied during the memory task to expand the capacity of short-term memory.In the note-taking phase,a proper method of figure noting is applied to coordinate with the other three tasks and reduce allocation of effort.In the production phase,skills of figure interpreting and methods of handling figures with Chinese characteristics are discussed to make interpreting figures faster and more accurate.This research shows that Gile's Effort Model is a very useful theory for interpreters to overcome difficulties in interpreting figures and improve the quality of figure interpreting.It is expected that some enlightenment will be cast on figure interpreting studies,interpreter education and interpreting practice in the future.
