As a masterpiece of Chinese classical literature,Hongloumeng(HLM)not only represents the peak of Chinese classical literature, but also presents all aspects of a prosperous ancient Chinese society. The increasing interest from the western academic circle in Chinese classical literature has led to a rise of literary translation from 1960s to 1970s,and HLM as a classic novel was unsurprisingly selected and included in many anthology and editorial books. It has consequently given rise to the research on HLM translation. However, the current studies focus mostly on the complete translation of HLM,such as David Hawkes'and Yang Hsien-yi's versions.Fragmentary or excerpted translation, like H.C.Chang's,has rarely been researched. As a Chinese-British Sinologist,Chang enjoyed knowledge on Chinese classical literature and was proficient in English language,so his version is of great research value. This thesis aims at making up for the blank in the study of Chang's fragmentary translation of HLM,and research on his version in terms of translation acceptance by target language readers. It,with reference to the original text from Yu Pingbo's edition, comprehensively researches on Chang's translation of Chapter 23 in HLM,titled as A Burial Mound for Flowers from Dream of Red Towers, and analyzes Chang's translation strategies under Nida's functional equivalence theory.Based on Chang's translation features, the author analyzed his translation from three aspects:amplification, paraphrasing and mistranslation. In order to present the translation features and research value of Chang's translation, the author applied comparative analysis with Yang's and Hawkes' versions. This thesis contains four chapters.Chapter One sets the background of this research, introducing HLM English translation versions, and briefing on H.C.Chang and his translation;and it points out the lack of research on fragmentary translation and excerpted translation of HLM,as well as Chang's translation.Chapter Two reviews the previous literature of HLM translation and Chang's translation, and presents the key points of Nida's Functional Equivalence theory.Chapter Three consists of three sub-chapter titled as Amplification,Paraphrasing and Mistranslation, analyzing Chang's translation features from the perspective of Functional Equivalence, and presenting the gap between the comprehension of the source language and the target language readers.Chapter Four concludes Chang's contribution to the Sino-West literary and cultural communication, his translation features, advantages and limitations of this translation,as well as the application of Nida's Functional Equivalence to study literary translation, providing inspiration for further research on Chang's translation and HLM translation.
