This report is based on the translation practice of the first chapter of Pesticides:Health,Safety and the Environment by Graham Matthews.The first chapter is Pesticides and Agricultural Development,which is important for people to understand the basic knowledge and the scientific use of pesticides,as well as helps people realize the environmental problems caused by pesticides.This translation report includes four parts.Part one is the description of the translation process,and it mainly introduces the book of Pesticides: Health,Safety and the Environment and the first chapter,which can impose positive influence to the scientific use of pesticides.Part two introduces the translation process,including the study of pesticides,ecological protection and other knowledge,the revision of translation and other contents.Part three is the case studies,the key part of this report.In this part,the author analyzes vocabulary,syntax and discourse difficulties with specific examples,which involves the translation of nouns,adjectives,attributive clauses,passive sentences,long sentences,ellipsis and so on,and talks about some translation methods such as conversion,the transformation of passive tense to active tense,separation and restructuring.Part four is the conclusion.After the translation,the author realized the difficulties caused by the direct translation and the lack of background knowledge,etc,and also realizes the importance of flexible translation,wide knowledge and bibliography,as well as the significance of weighing words and translation revision.
