Influence Of Attention Resources And Local Characteristics On Facial Image Recognition

There have controversial on facial expression recognition —— "positive emotion advantage" or "negative sentiment towards",and different people have different opinions about the local characteristics have influence on the facial image recognition.According to these two issues,the study through presentation time and hint position,to research the influence of the attention resources and local characteristics of clues on facial expressions recognition.Experiment 1 aims to explore different presentation time of the different intensity and valence facial expression recognition through the length of the presentation time controlling the amount of the resources.Experiment with 2(presentation time: 200 ms and 500 ms)x 2(expression intensity: high intensity,low intensity)x 2(facial expression valence: positive emotions,negative emotions)three factors within subjects design.Experiment 2 aims to use of clues-target paradigm research the local features(mouth and eyes)of different intensity and valence facial expression recognition.The condition of the experiment is full of resources(image stimulus presentation time is 500 ms),the experiment with 2(hint position: eye,mouth)x 2(expression intensity: high intensity,low intensity)x 2(facial expression valence: positive emotions,negative emotions)three factors within subjects design.Randomly selected 60 subjects from Zhengzhou university students as the subjects.The experiments using Eye Link 1000 plus and the behavioral indicators(reaction time)and eye movement indicators(fixation counts,total fixation duration and average pupil diameter)as results were analyzed.The result shows that:(1)When the attention relatively lack of resources on the fixation counts(image stimulus presentation time are 200 milliseconds),the number of fixation counts about positive emotions is significantly less than negative emotional pictures;When the attention resource is "relatively enough"(image stimulus presentation time are 500 milliseconds),the number of fixation counts about positive emotions is significantly less than negative emotional pictures.(2)The local characteristics of clues have an impact on facial expressions recognitionWhen the hint position on the eye,the positive emotions have more fixation counts and total fixation duration than negative emotional;when the hint position on the mouth,the tip position of clues in the eye of reaction time less than the reaction time of the mouth,the positive emotions have less fixation counts and total fixation duration than negative emotional.(3)The main effects of expression intensity are significant in the reaction time,fixation counts,total fixation and average pupil diameter.The high expression intensity have less reaction times,fixation count,total fixations and more bigger average pupil diameter than the low expression intensity images.The study draws the following conclusions:(1)The attention of the resources affect facial expression recognitionWhen there is relative lack of resources,results are showed "negative sentiment towards";when there is full of attention resources,results are showed "positive emotion advantage".(2)The local characteristics of clues have an impact on facial expressions recognitionWhen the hint position on the eye,negative emotions are more easy to recognition;when the hint position on the mouth,positive emotions are more easy to recognition.(3)The expression intensity affect the facial expressions recognitionThe high expression intensity is better than the low expression intensity images recognition.
