This is a project report on the translation of Tipping Point for Planet Earth authored by Anthony D.Barnosky and Elizabeth A.Hadly.The source text is chosen from introduction, chapter one and two of the book. There is a story of a journey in this book. The two authors are palaeoecologists. The book is seemingly of diary report made by the two palaeoecologists during their journey around the world.Their journey, which is both traveling adventures and research expeditions, reaches almost every continent of the earth.Even though the two authors are doing their palaeoecological research, they strongly feels that the whole world is confronted with serious environmental crisis, which is metaphorically described by the two authors as “planet earth hitting tipping point”.In this sense, this book is quite pleasing for reading and meaningful for our life.Hopefully, the translation of this book may bring more Chinese people's attention into this problem. With the aid of the text analysis, the source text can be categorized as informative text, based on the theory of communicative translation. In the process of translation, many translation skills and techniques have been employed such as complete correspondence, partial correspondence in lexical level, and amplification, inversion, and change of voices in syntactical level. The report is divided into four chapters: Chapter one gives a brief introduction to the background, significance, objectives and layout of this project;Chapter two deals with the preparatory work for the translation, which includes the text analysis of the source text, analysis of the key and difficult points, and introduction to the main tools;Chapter three provides analysis of many examples to illustrate the employment of different translation skills and techniques in dealing with the translation problems;Chapter four tends to generalize deficiency in the process of translation, and provides lessons and enlightenment for the future translation.
