The source text of the report is a part of About Translation, written by Peter Newmark,a famous English translator and translation theorist. The translator's task is to translate chapter 8 and chapter 9 into Chinese. The two chapters are mainly about translation and mis-translation,pragmatic translation and literal translation.According to Peter Newmark's classification of texts, the book belongs to the category of information text. Therefore, the translator adopts Newmark's communicative translation as the theoretic basis guiding the whole translating process.Combining with theory, the translator analyzes and deals with the difficulties and key points from lexical, syntax, text and culture and meanwhile discusses translating strategies and skills, such as semantic extension, literal translation, transplantation, division, combination, omission, negation and annotation.Ultimately, the translator summarizes the experience and shortcomings of the translation practice. The report, through analysis and discussion from the four levels, summarizes the feasible and practical translation skills as well as some problems worth attention, which are expected to be of avail to other translators who are engaged in the translation of informative text.
