The creation of emulated ancient seals finds one difficulty in the scarcity of available characters. Therefore,it is meaningful to conduct a research on the "supplement of the characters used in the creation of emulated ancient seals".As such a research in the academia is not perfect,we deem it a necessity to further such a research.Focusing on the commonly used characters in modern Chinese,we find the indirect relations between the characters not used in the creation of emulated ancient seals and the commonly used characters in modern Chinese by looking up in the available literatures and reference books. The seal's characters sharing an indirect relation with the commonly used characters in modem Chinese are named herein "flexible characters",which is divided into "Initial character","Elaborate character","Abbreviated character","Variant character","Interchangeable character" and the "Glyph determination" characters. It also summarizes and analyzes the feasibility to reuse these seal characters for the creation of emulated ancient seals,so as to expand the sources of the seal characters. Then it discriminates and analyzes the specific usages of these supplemented characters to offer more accurate characters for the creation of ancient seals. In the light of supplementation and use analysis,a corresponding plan to apply these supplementary characters in ancient seal imitation will be made in the fourth chapter. In addition, the findings of this research topic have been sorted out and attached as"Sorting Table of the Flexible Characters in Seals Inscriptions" and "the Index of Supplemented Seal Characters for the Creation of Emulated Ancient Seals",for practical uses.
