The Multi-dimensional Analysis Of Modal Adverb "??"

Based on the three-plane theory this study makes a detailed investigation including semantic,syntactic and pragmatic researches on the modern Chinese "??"that according to the concept of modality,we determine its position of the modal adverb.This study consists of five main chapters:Chapter 1 briefly introduces the purpose and the meaning of this study,the object and scope that determines the modal adverb position of"??".Also it summarizes the current research studies and makes a statement about research method and the source corpus.Chapter 2 firstly introduces the semantic meaning of"?"and"? ",then emphatically analyzes the modality of "??"that expresses dynamic,deontic and epistemic modality.Dynamic modality expresses the speaker's subjective intentions.On one hand,the deontic modality is to express reasonable rationality,while expressing the instructions of the speaker.Epistemic modality expresses the subjective judgment of the speaker.In addition,this chapter also briefly analyzes the different semantic priorities of "??"?"?"and"?? X ??".Chapter 3 analyzes the syntax that in syntactic distribution,"??"mainly lies between subject-predicate and in syntactic function,it is mainly used as adverbials,but it is not simply as adverbials but a predication." ??"expresses different modality when matching with aspectual marker,and there is no consistency inside.Regarding of the frequency of co-occurrence with"??,the adverb"?"is the highest,next are the adverbs"?"and"?.They are semantically integrated and subjective.Furthermore,some factors can help us to judge the expression modality of"??"-person,having or not"??",the nature of the event,going with"?",the effect of hypothesis complex sentence and its negative form,etc.Chapter 4 examines its performance in pragmatic terms.By investigating "??"in mood type,declarative mood takes the largest proportion and next is interrogative mood and imperative mood is the least.On the speech act "??" which expresses dynamic modality mainly involves commissives and directives.When it expresses deontic modality,it mainly involves directives and then assertives.When it expresses epistemic modality,it only involves assertives.Besides,it also can stress the focal points and strengthen the tone.The last part is the conclusion which presents a final summary.Meanwhile it points out the deficiency of this study and the problems that need to be further discussed.
