A Report On The Translation Of Our Kids:The American Dream In Crisis(Chapter 2 Excerpts)

This thesis is a translation practice report of the second chapter(excerpt)of Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis,whose author is theHarvard University Professor,Robert D.Putnam.Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisisshifts the perspective from "social capital" to "social inequality",through the comparison of the life experiences of two generations of ordinary Americans,trying to show us that the inequality of social strata and classesin today'sAmerican society has reached a shocking degree.The translation of this book can help the Chinese readers have a deepsense of the inequality of American society.During the process of the translationpractice,the translator takes the three rules of the Skopos Theory: the Skopos rule,the coherence rule,and the fidelity rule as the theoretical basis of this translation practice material,so as to explore the problems encountered in the process of information text translation and the resolution strategy.Moreover,in the process of translation,for the problems of lexical semantic level,the translator was mainly guided by the fidelity rule,especially in the translation of proper nouns and abbreviations with relatively fixed semantic meaning;for the translation of long sentences,the translator give consideration to both the three abovementioned rules,with the adaptable translation methods such as word order adjustment,amplification and(or)filling,split and recombination and other methods of translation,to ensure that the translation is faithful and fluent;for the translation of discourse level,the translator was mainly guided bythe coherence rule,through the translation strategies such as lexical cohesion,omission,substitution,conjunction,reiteration and collocation,to achievethe cohesion and coherence of the discourse.At the end of the report,the translator has made a brief reflection and summary of this translation practice.Through this translation practice,not only the translator's understanding of the functionalist teleology has deepened,but also the translation competence of the translator has actually improved.
