The translation material of this project is selected from Health and Education in Early Childhood:Predictors,Interventions, and Polices, which was edited by Arthur J.Reynolds,Arthur J.Rolnick and Judy A.Temple, and was first published by Cambridge University Press in 2014.This book mainly presents conceptual issues, research findings, program and policy implications of promoting health and school readiness. The selected parts,Chapter 12 and Chapter 13 of Part ?,are about the effects of health and education policy on child development. The 12th Chapter discusses the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act(PPACA)signed into law by President Obama in March 2010,and its potential impact on children's medical care. The 13th Chapter discusses the effects of health literacy on children's health and school readiness. The source text is informative according to the text type of Reiss. The major purpose of this translation project is to convey information to the readers and achieve mutual understanding, and equivalent or similar effects should be produced between readers of the original text and target text. Thus, the translator should consider the translation purpose and target readers first. However, the translation can be finished under the guidance of the three principles of skopos theory proposed by Has.J.Vermeer in 1970s.The three rules of skopos theory are skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.As a result,in the course of translation, translation strategies such as conversion, meaning extension, domestication are adopted to deal with the difficulties at lexical level;amplification and division are adopted to deal with the difficulties at sentence level.Besides, the translator also discusses the translation of passive sentences in different ways. The use of these translation strategies follows the skopos theory and accords the skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.
