Translation plays a vital role in different countries allowing them to communicate with each other. In the context o f globalization,China receives more and more foreign academic texts;t herefore, high quality translation of academic texts are in great demand. However, the current situation of academic text translation is insufficient due to the following reasons: first, the quality of the academic text translation is not satisfactory;second, the academic text translation does not draw enough attention from translation circles;and third, theoretical studies aimed at academic texts only have been ignored for a long time. These issues exert a negative influence on the quality of academic translation, thereby restricting the prevalence and development of academic achievements. On the basis of the current situation of academic text translation, the present report will present a description and analysis of an academic text translation and endeavor to generalize some useful methods for academic text translation based on the author's own translation experience so as to improve its quality. The translation materials are the exce rpts of Becoming a Translator: An Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Translation, which presents both users' and translators' perspectives on translation. After analyzing the source text and the features of the academic translation, some problems a bout the academic texts translation are solved, and some effective translation strategies and methods are generalized.Guided by Newmark's text typology, this report analyzes some typical translation cases at three levels according to communicative translation and semantic translation. At lexical level, literal translation and contextual translation can be used on the basis of semantic strategy because of the numerous terminologies, professional words and polysemy phnomena in academic works. At syntactical level, communicative strategy is the best choice.Since great priorities should be given to the response of readers, the original structure of the source text needs to be changed so as to conform to the expression convention of target reader's language.Conversion of sentence patterns, sentence splitting, inverse translation and recombination can be applied to translate the high frequency sentences in academic works, such as passive sentences, causality sentences, and long complex sentences. At textual level, the differences in the cohesion and coherence between English and Chinese languages are analyzed with the finding that reorganization and adjustment of cohesive words can be used to improve translation quality in academic text translation. In conclusion, this report will provide some solutions to the problems in academic text translation and will be helpful and complementary to academic text translation and research.
