With the development of globalization, the academic exchanges are increasing rapidly, and the translation of academic works is becoming more and more important. As one of the most important sinologists in the 20 th century,Arthur Waley made a great contribution to the cultural exchanges between China and the West. This translation report takes the excerpts of chapter I,II and VIII from Perlmutter Ruth's doctoral dissertation Arthur Waley and His Place in the Modern Movement between the Two Wars as translation material. The excerpts cover the introduction to Waley's life and different text types of Chinese classics that he has translated. This dissertation is well-structured with natural language and reasonable logic, and it quotes a large amount of supplementary information, which highlights the characteristics of the information text, and embodies requirements of accurate transmission of information in communicative translation.Based on Newmark's communicative translation theory, the author discusses how to translate names of person, terms and long sentences using translation methods and techniques such as literal translation, addition, annotation, combination, etc. The author hopes that this report could provide a reference for the later translation of academic works.
