The study stems from real in-class consecutive interpreting practice on a speech about China's pension system.Having transformed five students' interpreting recordings into transcripts, the author focuses on the terminology translation aspect of the policy-themed speech. With explicitation as the objective, the author analyses the students' translations from the perspectives of transcoding and the Theory of Sense. The analysis constitutes a proof-based examination of each translation and offers correction suggestions as well as a credible translation. The study finds that when the interpreter has learned a certain term beforehand,s/he is still able to quickly translate it using transcoding regardless of the extent s/he understands the speech.Otherwise,if the interpreter has little knowledge of neither the term nor the speech content,s/he is apt to be confined to the source language and produce unidiomatic and inaccurate translation;even grammatical mistakes might occur due to the stress on the spot and the interpreter's incompetency in the target language.Be it transcoding and the Theory of Sense, the translation is supposed to be succinct for the purpose of explicitation as interpreter is to quickly convey the speaker's message to the target audience. The study concludes that transcoding and the Theory of Sense may be employed in tandem, contrary to the belief that transcoding is not translating. The interpreter might as well use transcoding when s/he has prior knowledge;otherwise s/he could follow the translation process according to the Theory of Sence. The conclusion highlights the significance of interpreters' intensive knowledge base, language competency and effective preparation before an assignment.
