The Story of Life in 25 Fossils,written by American paleontologist Donald Prothero,is a book about paleontology and the history of evolution.With three chapters of the book as examples,this thesis analyzes several problems encountered and discusses strategies,solutions and other reflections on the translation project.The translation of paleontology terminologies could be summarized from three aspects.Firstly,due to different context,some terminologies may have various meanings,which requires the translator to choose appropriate one.The second aspect involves terms without ready-made translation,and the translator is expected to employ some different strategies to deal with them.Finally,cultural backgrounds are taken into consideration and the translator should attach importance to the cultural backgrounds behind the terms.To solve problems above,this thesis proposes three translation strategies.The first one is to translate in a flexible manner with focus on the specific meanings of terminologies.The second one is to trace the origins that may reflect the meanings of terms.The last one is to fully look up and verify,and to make sure that the translation of terms is in line with the established rules and authoritative translation.Besides,annotations to explain are recommended,if necessary.By identifying,analyzing and solving the problems,this thesis finally concludes that the translation of the terminologies should be faithful to the context,conform to the origins and follow the rules.
