This is a report on the translation of an English academic book—Papers in Translation Studies,It collected cutting-edge research in translation studies, offering fresh perspectives on the field. This book is divided into three parts.Part one focuses on linguistics, ideology, language planning and policy.Part two is related to translator training.Part three examines issues like corpus-based translation studies, natural language processing and machine translation. The translator chooses the third part as the translation material and takes Skopos theory as the theoretical guidance. As research results in certain fields, academic papers are important references for scholars.Translating academic papers plays an essential role in spreading and exchanging scientific information and academic views,so the translation of academic theses should transmit the information in the source texts accurately and completely, embody the characteristics of academic papers as well as take accessibility and readability into account.Academic papers have obvious linguistic features. With regard to lexical level, the source text contains many terminologies and nominalization structures. As for syntactic level, passive voices and long sentences are widely used. When it comes to the textual level, the source text is clear in logic, formal in style, and coherent in structure. The report consists of five chapters.Chapter one is the description of the translation task.Chapter two pictures the translation process, including preparations before translation, procedures of translation as well as proofreading and revision after translation.Chapter three introduces Skopos theory, accounting for the applicability of Skopos theory for guiding academic papers translation. In chapter four, the translator analyzes translation problems and difficulties encountered in translation practice and discusses corresponding solutions under the guidance of Skopos theory. For example, the translation of terminologies has to resort to specialized dictionaries, reference books and parallel texts;conversion of the parts of speech and omission can be used to translate nominalization structures;with regard to passive voices, they can be translated into active voices or no subject sentences through voice conversion and sentence pattern transformation;long and complex sentences can be treated with sequential translation method, reverse translation method and comprehensive methods;the discourse of the target text should be consistent with the source text in coherence and logic by adding pronouns and conjunctions;and different methods are adopted to deal with figures and tables in the source text according to their functions.Chapter five concludes this translation practice by reflecting translator's gains and limitations in translation process.Guided by Skopos theory and taking academic paper as case study, this report aims to summarize translation strategies and methods of academic papers, improve translator's competence and provide foreign academic resources and results for domestic translation studies.
