This translation project report focuses on the first chapter(On Language and Its Manifestations)of the linguistic work,Written Language and Psychological Development. The chosen part mainly discusses how to define language, through substance or form, and what De Saussure's opinions about it are.As a classic academic work, the source text is characterized with the use of numerous linguistic terms, complicated syntactic structures, and complex long sentences with many attributive clause and parenthesis which require the translator to have certain linguistic knowledge as background and well-structured grammar framework and good logical thinking capability.According to the features of source text,Katharina Reiss's theory of text typology is employed as a theoretic guidance,to which the principle "plain prose, explicitation as required" of informative texts is greatly adhered.Guided by the theory,in specific cases, translation strategies such as splitting, shift of perspective and amplification, etc are employed to translate these long and difficult sentences. This report proves the great significance and practicability of Katharina Reiss's text typology theory in translation. The translator hopes it will provide some guidance to the later researches of informative texts translating.Meanwhile, through this translation practice, the translator hopes it will help improve her level of translation, enrich the knowledge in linguistic theory, and pave the way to a qualified translator.
