This is a project report on the translation of Under the Black Ensign,a book about ocean adventure by American writer L.Ron Hubbard. The author of this report translated the first five chapters of the book. With special use of language, the book stylistically conforms to characteristics of novels of the golden age of science fiction, which makes it worth translating. It contains many colloquial expressions of the age and Spanish and nautical terms.Besides,it puts emphasis on the detailed description of background and scenes, which constitutes the biggest difficulty in translation. The author parsed sentences and analyzed the text before translation according to the different types of text registers put forward by Peter Newmark.During translation, functional shift, literal translation and free translation are applied to make the target text as faithful and expressive as the original one.The aim of a novel is mainly to draw readers' attention,so it is important to produce on readers of the target text an effect as close as possible to that exerted on the readers of the original, and make them have the same response. Therefore, the author uses reader's response theory as the guidance of the translation project.By solving those problems, the author gets some experience and inspirations, which will certainly be useful for improving the accuracy of author's future translation.
