Construction contracts are semi-legal instruments containing legal effects, according to which contractors carry out construction while contractees make payment.Construction contracts not only control the work process and protect the interests of both parties to the greatest extent, but also specify the legitimate aspirations of the two parties accurately, which proves to be one of the most important components of engineering contracts.According to the author's findings, complex sentences of modification account for half of construction contracts, among which conditionals are typical, describing and defining the rights and responsibilities of the two parties.Taking the Construction Contract for XX Municipal Construction Project as an example, nearly 60%of all the 241 sentences can be categorized as complex sentences of modification. To make clear the extent of responsibilities of contractors and contractees, having a good translation of the conditionals plays an important role in translating the whole contract. On the basis of C-E translation, this thesis probes into the classification and English translation strategies of conditionals in construction contracts. After intensively reading and studying, the author finds that the conditionals in Chinese construction contracts fall into three parts, namely the conditionals with explicit condition conjunctions, the ones with explicit temporal conjunctions and the ones without explicit conjunctions.According to such categorization, together with the translation experience the author gains in translating the construction contract, three C-E translation strategies are concluded, namely literal translation, inversion, and division and recombination, among which inversion can be divided into inverting into adverbial clauses of time, inverting into participles, and inverting into attributive clauses. Finally, the author summarizes the findings into the thesis, hoping that the present research will provide help to the future translation practices of construction contracts.
