The book chosen to be translated is Filling the Void written by American writer Dorothy Bullitt, covering from chapter 1 to chapter 3.English and Chinese are two languages with numerous differences. In the process of translation, the author finds a lot of English attributive clauses as many as 107.How to understand these attributive clauses correctly and transform them into fluent and clear Chinese is a tough task. The author analyzes this problem deeply in the thesis. The research method adopted in this thesis is case study. The author collects all of the English attributive clauses in the translation material and choose some of them as examples. Then the author analyses the translation of different types of attributive clauses found in translation material, with guide of translation principles of Ye Zinan,Lv Shuxiang,Peng Ping and Sun Zhili. Then the author concludes her findings.Through analysis, the thesis comes to the conclusion that there are four kinds of methods of translating English attributive clauses in this translation material. And they are:translating the attributive clause into prepositive attribute, translating the attributive clause into coordinate clause, translating the attributive clause into an independent clause with the antecedent as its subject or object, and translating the attributive clause into an adverbial clause. When translating attributive clause, the translator should first understand correctly the meaning, analyzing the logical relationship expressing reasons, conditions or results, etc.between the subject and the clause. And then he/she should apply translation methods flexibly according to the length of attributive clauses, the other modifiers of the antecedent and context,in order to make the target language brief and fluent.
