For the teaching of Chinese language abroad,the selection and use of teaching material have assumed great importance.That is because the teaching material can be a teacher for those learners who study the language in the context of their own mother language.Confucius institute is the main site for teaching Chinese language abroad.It is also important to select and use the teaching material properly in the Confucius institute.Different from those ordinary schools aimed at teaching Chinese language,Confucius institute has its own distinctive features and regional characteristics.Hence,the selection of teaching material in Confucius institute should be suited to the actual condition.To be more specific,the selection and use of teaching material should be consistent with the factors,such as the features,learning motivation and learning ability of those students.In this way,the teaching material can be fully utilized to improve the teaching quality.After passing the selection of Confucius Institute Headquarters(Hanban)for enlisting volunteers,the author worked in Confucius College of Honam University for 10 months.Meanwhile,the author made a survey of the use of Speak Chinese-Elementary 1 which is the teaching material for oral Chinese in the Confucius institute.Luckily,the author passed the volunteer selection organized by Hanban and became a teacher in Confucius Institute,Honam University for ten months.During the period,it was found that Primary Oral Chinese is the most popular and important course in the Confucius Institute.However,quite a few problems were found in the use of textbook and many volunteer Chinese teachers expressed their dissatisfaction to the teaching material.Therefore,the author carried out research and analysis on Speaking Chinese Primary I the primary oral Chinese teaching material of the institute.This paper objectively analyzes the textbook' s main content,analyzes the institute' s current situation and characteristics of students.Finally,combined with the analytical conclusions of the two,it proposes some suggestive advice to the use of Chinese teaching material.The aim is to offer reference suggestions to teachers and students who are using this teaching material,thereby making contributions to improving teaching quality and learning efficiency.By means of literature review,questionnaire,statistical analysis and comparative analysis,the author has surveyed the structure and content of the teaching material by taking the environment and current use of the book into consideration.This paper has also offered some advice on how to use the teaching material more effectively.This paper consists of five chapters.As the introduction to the paper,the first chapter has discussed the reason for choosing the research topic,research background,research significance and research method.The research achievements about the teaching material of elementary oral language in South Korea have been also summarized briefly.The second chapter will elaborate on the research object.After giving a description of the publishing company and its published teaching materials for Chinese language,this chapter will also discuss the use of the book in the Confucius institute.The requirement and objective of the courses in the Confucius institute will be discussed.Moreover,this chapter has analyzed the actual condition of those students using the teaching material.The third chapter aims to analyze the content of teaching material.Besides combining the theoretical knowledge and the result of the questionnaire,the author has referred to the results of previous researches so as to analyze the content of the book.Firstly,the binding design and structural arrangement of the book have been analyzed.It is pointed out that the overall design of the book has the national feature and thus won the favor of many Korean students.Secondly,this chapter has analyzed the topics and scenarios of teaching material.Some factors,such as the difficulty in the conversation and textbook,the high number of strange words and the words beyond the expected level,grammar and exercise,have been also analyzed.According to the statistical data and the result of questionnaire,some conclusions have been made as follows.Firstly,the topic and scenario of the teaching material are well suited to those students studying the oral language at the elementary level.The teaching content is also closely related to the daily use.Although it is highly practical,it should be further improved in terms of interactive activity and amusing content.Secondly,the content of the book is quite difficult for most users in the Confucius institute.To be more specific,it is faced with various problems,such as overly long sentence,the high number of grammar points and those strange words beyond the expected level as well as the disorderly arrangement of grammar points.As a result,it has put an enormous pressure on those students,which makes it difficult to achieve the learning objective.Thirdly,the writing-oriented exercises have accounted for an overly high proportion of teaching material.Other problems include the overly highly number of comprehension-oriented exercise as well as the inadequacy of interactive exercise,mechanical exercise and the exercise for oral expression.Due to the limited diversity in the exercise form,those students will feel bored easily.Some advice has been provided for those users in the fourth chapter.According to the result of the analysis on teaching material and questionnaire,this chapter will offer some advice for the teacher,student and Confucius institute.It is pointed out that those teachers should focus on the needs of those students.The teaching content should be changed to better suit the features of the oral Chinese lesson as well as the actual ability and learning objective of those students.Those students should have a proper attitude towards study.They should make efforts to preview and review for the lesson.They should also listen to the instruction attentively and cooperate with the teacher for teaching activities.The setting of the course in the Confucius institute should be adjusted to the actual condition of those students.The lesson hour and course requirement adopted 10 years ago should be changed accordingly.The fifth chapter is the conclusion of the research.The flaws in the use of the teaching material in the Confucius institute have been pointed out.In order to improve the teaching quality of the elementary oral Chinese lesson in the school.the teacher should adjust the content of teaching material to the actual condition of those students.The school should also make a new arrangement and requirement for the course.Some requirement and advice on the learning attitude and strategy have been also proposed.Lastly,the flaw of this research has been also pointed.It is hoped that further researches on the use of teaching material can be made.The appendix of this paper is the questionnaire about the teaching material.
