A Report On The Chinese Translation Of New China And Old:Personal Recollections And Observations Of Thirty Years (Chapters ?-?)

As one of the important tourist texts,travel notes carry extensive personal emotions,abundant tourism and cultural information.Therefore,the translation of travel notes is an important way to broaden spiritual dimensions,promote tourism development and cultural exchange.In view of this,this thesis mainly studies the translation principles and the specific translation techniques from the perspective of Peter Newmark's text typology theory.This thesis is a translation report of a travel note based on the author 's translation of chapter ? and chapter ? which are mainly about the author's views on Chinese religion,superstition and Fung-shui from the source text of Arthur Evans Moule's New China and Old:Personal Recollections and Observations of Thirty Years.Arthur Evans Moule presents his vision of the last decades of Imperial China to the Western readers with his own observations of China for 30 years,thus enhancing Westerners' understanding of China although there exists personal prejudice to some extent.Generally speaking,the travel note is subjective on the one hand,but on the other hand,it also contains a large amount of objective description content.Based on Peter Newmark's text typology theory,it could be concluded that the travel note is a text with the expressive and informative function.Hence semantic translation and communicative translation,the two translation strategies put forward by Peter Newmark,should be adopted to approach the translation of travel notes.The report explains the applicable translation techniques including transliteration,literal translation,literal translation plus explanation,division,amplification,paraphrase and shift for translating travel notes at the lexical and syntactical level in details via case study.The text type and linguistic features of travel notes are analyzed and the difficulties in translating travel notes are summarized in the report.The thesis explores the translation techniques for travel notes in the hope of providing reference and guidance for others.
