New China and Old:Personal Recollections and Observations for Thirty Years written by Ven.Arthur E.Moule is a significant part of sinology abroad. This book has some certain research value. Therefore,we should pay much attention to its translation study.New China and Old is a memoir. Thus it focuses on description and narrative. In terms of vocabulary, this book involves a large number of translations of proper nouns and culture-loaded words. These vocabularies show distinct characteristics of the times. In terms of sentence structure, different kinds of sentence patterns are used in source text such as long and difficult sentences, attributive clause and passive voice, etc. In text, the source text is coherent and cohesive on the whole. In light of its vocabulary, syntactic and discourse characteristics, the author guided by Jin Di's theory of equivalent effort adopts diverse translation methods such as literal translation, free translation, backward translation, etc.to deal with translation difficulties to keep the effect of TT on readers the same as that of ST.Hope it will help us to better understand the translation characteristics of this kind and will give some benefits to those who will engage in such types of text.
