New China and Old:Personal Recollections and Observations of Thirty Years is a memoir written by Ven.Arthur E.Moule who was an English missionary preaching in China from 1861 to 1890.Through thirty years of missionary service in China,he witnessed in person such a historical event as the Taiping Rebellion and participated in the anti-opium activities.Having come into contact with various communities in China,Ven Arthur E.Moule had a record of what he had seen and heard, who provided a deep insight into the Chinese society, giving his perspectives of comments on China in the late Qing Dynasty in the eye of an English missionary. The memoir presents a real image of China in that historical time, showing the extensive sociality, which also can be seen as the historical documents with great historical values, providing the first-hand material for the readers to explore late Qing society. This report is based on the translation of the chapter five and six of New China and Old:Personal Recollections and Observations of Thirty Years. The author was responsible for the translation of the chapter five and six in the memoir. In chapter five,Ven.Arthur E.Moule was in close contact with a local magistrate through his personal observations including magistrate's family background, life experiences, his personality and religious belief. The authentic characteristics of the society in that historical time have been shown.Chapter six lays emphasis on how Buddhism and Taoism affect Chinese life, which is relevant with the Chinese Confucian classics, religious superstitions, the local religious activities and other traditional etiquettes. This report is guided by Jin Di's theory of equivalent effect, inwhich three concepts are stressed:receptor, effect, equivalence.Under the guidance of Jin Di's theory of equivalent effect, the author adopted the effective translation strategies flexibly and discussed the examples in detail for the aims of figuring out the translation of words and sentences, aiming to devote to the idiomatic and accurate translated version. This report provides some valuable experience gained from the translation practice, analyzes the existing problems and inadequacies, lists the problems to be solved and points out the future direction. The author hopes the translation will be beneficial to provide abundant materials for the studies on China in that historical period.
