A Report On Chinese Translation Of A Woman In China(Chapters 12-14)

In the late 19th century,western powers waged wars against China and signed unequal treaties with China.With the help of these treaties,European missionaries started to swarm into China to explore this colossal and ancient country.A Woman in China,written by Mary Eliza Bakewell Gaunt,was published in 1914 in London that was warmly welcomed by foreigners.The book was finished based on the author's travel experiences during the late period of Qing Dynasty,twenty-one chapters in total.The writer has finished the report on the basis of the translation of the selected text,from chapter 12 to chapter 14,13000 words in total.It describes the author's experiences from Tsung Hua Chou to Jehol and the situation of missionaries.The report is made up with five parts:introduction,preparations before translation,theoretical basis,case studies and conclusion.In chapter one,the writer mainly introduced the project and the significance of the project.In chapter two,the source text and linguistic features of the text were mainly explained.The Equivalent Effect Theory was introduced in chapter three.The writer explained the concepts of receptor,effect and equivalence.Under the guidance of equivalent effect theory,the writer tried to make the translated text accurate and coherent as much as possible.In chapter four,words,sentences and paragraphs were analyzed from the perspective of equivalent effect theory.The writer adopted many translation methods such as literal translation,free translation,transliteration,etc,and tried to make the translated text conform to the target language.Inadequacies and future efforts were pointed out in chapter five.Because the source text belongs to travel notes and it is loaded with cultural elements,so the task of translating the text is tough enough.The writer tried to make the translated text accurate and faithful as much as possible under the guidance of equivalent effect theory.It is hopeful that the translated text is helpful for cross-cultural exchanges and provides valuable information for Sinology research.
