A Report On E-C Translation Of Railway Transportation Systems (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Newmark's Text Typology

The development of railway transportation technology has yielded fruitful results and attracted widespread attention from countries around the world.The translation of related books on railway transportation technology can strengthen international technology exchange and cooperation and promote the development of China's railway transportation technology and achieve the goal of becoming a strong country with science and technology.This practice report mainly studies the process of English-Chinese translation of railway transportation texts from the perspective of Newmark's text typology.The author attempts to guide the translation practice with Newmark's text typology,and analyzes and summarizes the translation process by using the English book Railway Transportation Systems(excerpts)as translation practice materials,analyzing semantic translation and communicative translation used in the translation of terminologies,nominalizations,simple and long difficult sentences,sentences with passive voices and formulas.In the end,the author summarizes the translation practice process and its limitations,and makes suggestions for future research.Through this translation practice,the author found: 1)The railway transportation text contains a lot of professional terms,nominalized structures,formulas,and passive sentences,which is the focus of translation.2)The railway transportation technology text here belongs to science and technology text aiming at conveying information.Despite the difference in Chinese and English languages,the culture differences in the railway transportation text is not so obvious as the target readers usually have basic professional background.In order to achieve successful translation of railway transportation texts,translators do not necessarily adopt a single semantic translation method or a communicative translation method and should be flexible in choosing translation strategies and methods.3)Under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation,the translator can accurately convey information.According to the type and function of the target text,the translator can adopt appropriate translation techniques,such as addition,omission,conversion,etc.to achieve accurate and standard technical translation.Through the translation practice,the author has increased the knowledge reserve of relevant fields,and concluded that when translating highly specialized texts,a large number of relevant books should be consulted and semantic translation and communicative translation should be flexibly applied based on the comprehensive consideration of text types and translation purposes.With a focus on the characteristics of railway transportation texts,translation of such texts under the guidance of Newmark's text typology can achieve the purpose of accurate transmission of information,which may contribute to academic and technological exchange.
