We take modal adverb“haodai”as the object of study in this paper. We probed into its semantic function based on syntactic distribution from synchronic approach and diachronic corpus. We mainly explained the evolved relatioanships between different meanings of modal adverb“haodai”and discussed its expressive fuction based on the achievements summed up by our predecessors. The paper consists of three parts, main details as follows:The first part is the preface, which introduces the purpose and significance of the article, reviews the general situation of studies on“haodai”and related research, explains the theoretical basis, research method and corpus source of this paper. The second part is the main part of the full text,a total of three chapters. The first chapter begins with a brief explanation of the formation of the modal adverb"haodai",and its semantics is sorted out.We took syntactic behavior as criterion and summed up that“haodai”in the Chinese level for four meanings:“anyhow”?“haodai1”?,“make do with”?“haodai2”?,“finally”?“haodai3”?,“at least”?“haodai4”?.and then different semantic"haodai"for comparative analysis. The second chapter mainly studies the derivative relations among diffierent semantics, and discusses the context and the motive and mechanism of their application language contexts of“haodai”.We found that the semantic evolution is an radiant evolution centres on core sense“haodai1”,contexts of four meanings are basically complementary. In the third chapter,we discussed expression function of“haodai”combined with the semanteme. We found“haodai”has the function of emphasis, making clear presupposition, pragmatic moderate, textual cohesion. The third part is the conclusion, summarized which we been discussing in whole article, and pointed out the innovation and deficiency of the article.
