Study On The Relationship Among Stigma, Sexual Harassment And Personality

Sexual harassment is a widespread social problem with increasing trend. We should pay high attention to the phenomenon of sexual harassment and stigmatization. The study of sexual harassment and stigma has a long history. Researchers examined behaviors,psychological effects and coping styles of social stigma groups by qualitative and quantitative analysis in the perspective of law, sociology and psychology.Based on previous literature review, the study examined the associations among sexual harassment, stigma and personality by using Sexual Harassment Questionnaire in Workplace(SEQ-W),Stigma of Sexual Harassment Questionnaire (SSHQ) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Short Scale in China (EPQ-RSC). Taking employees and college students in Heilongjiang Province and Jilin Province as subjects, this study sent 764 questionnaires and received 691 effective questionnaires. The results are as follows:(1) The sexual harassment and personality have different influences on stigma.(2) The self-constructive SSHQ had a good reliability and validity. Cronbach's a was 0.84; Split-half reliability was 0.85; And test-retest reliability was 0.70.(3) Subjects with different demographic backgrounds showed significant differences on the level of sexual harassment and stigma.(4) Sexual harassment had a significant positive correlation with stigma. Extroversion dimension of personality had a significant negative correlation with sexual harassment and stigma respectively.(5) Sexual harassment positively predicted stigma of sexual harassment.(6) Extroversion dimension of personality negatively moderated the positive relationship between sexual harassment and stigma.The results showed that sexual harassment and personality had significant influences on stigma. Avoiding the occurrence of sexual harassment can effectively reduce the stigma. Once the sexual harassment happened, we should pay attention to preventing the self-stigma of introvert particularly. Based on the results, the study put forward effective ways to weaken the stigma of sexual harassment.
